Red Squirrel Identification
The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a well-known native species in the UK, however, its population has declined dramatically over the past century. The introduction of non-native grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America in the late 19th century has been a major factor in the decline of the red squirrel population. Additionally, habitat loss and fragmentation have also significantly contributed.
To conserve the remaining red squirrel populations in the UK, several conservation initiatives have been established to promote the conservation of red squirrels through habitat management, monitoring of populations, and control of grey squirrels. In some areas, the introduction of disease-free grey squirrels and habitat management has led to the re-establishment of red squirrel populations.
